This is a draft of a very useful guide designed to help clinicians help individuals with degenerative conditions and/or those who may lose their speech temporarily (e.g., after surgery) to "bank/store" digital recordings of their words, phrases, stories, songs and keep them safe. Then, the individual can use his/her own voice at a later time to communicate using prerecorded messages.

This poster (presented at ASHA 2018 in Boston) describes features of the language learning context experienced by a young child during a hospitalization. Characteristics of physical, linguistic, social, and cultural issues are discussed and the limited functional interaction time available to some children during hospitalizations is documented. Recommendations are provided to improve care and support the development of language and communication skills.

This presentation describes a range of communication needs patients and providers encounter in hospitals and discusses patient rights and a communication needs assessment. Presenters share their personal story about how a community hospital came together in an effort to meet the immediate needs and more complex communication needs of patients. In so doing, they managed to improve the quality of care and satisfaction of both staff and patients. They also describe the development of the commercially available On The Spot, a Resource Book and Tool Kit.

This presentation summarizes the negative impact of patient-provider communication barriers on the quality of medical care today. Patak, a physician and former nurse, stresses the need to provide communication options to all patients who have difficulty communicating. The presentation summarizes results of studies comparing the use of VidaTak Communication Boards (available in multiple languages and as a picture board) with other communication options (gestures, electronic devices).

VidaTak boards are used today at several top medical centers (Mayo Clinic, Massachusetts General Hospital, Cleveland Clinic, UCLA Medical Center, UCSF Medical Center, University of Pittsburg Medical Center). There is strong evidence to support their use in hospitals. Go to http://www.vidatak.com

A presentation at San Jose State University (April 2016) for Dr. Wendy Quach's class of graduate students in speech-language pathology. Also attended by some local professionals. An interactive workshop that focused on the roe of SLPs in addressing issues related to improving communication between health care providers and patients (PPC).
SLPs have a key role to play in this area of policy and practice. This is true whether they work in educational or heath care settings, private practices or other organizations within their communities.

Blackstone and Pressman presented an interactive session at the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association on November 19, 2011. Participants worked on developing action steps that could improve patient-provider communication in various medical settings. The session was a "call-to-action" for ASHA members, both speech-language pathologists and audiologists, no matter where they are employed. Participants were invited to join the patient-provider communication forum and continue to work toward the involvement of our professions in planning and implementing more effective patient-provider communication in all medical encounters.

This session will focus on how to prepare people with complex communication needs (CCN) to communicate effectively and efficiently during the many future medical encounters each will inevitably face over a lifetime. We will address ways to prevent or mitigate the communication barriers and breakdowns that so often occur during emergencies, as well as during more routine interactions with medical personnel in office visits and hospitalizations.
