A group from Penn State University (Dr. David McNaughton, David Chapple, Becca Stroschein) presented some recent and upcoming patient-provider communication projects supported by the Rehabilitation Engineering Research Center on Augmentative and Alternative Communication (RERC on AAC).

This is a presentation by Kristin Coffey, MS, CCLS, at the Patient-Provider Communication Network's April 2021 forum. Kristin is a Child Life Specialist in the Autism Spectrum Center at Boston Children's Hospital. As part of her role, Kristin supports the preparation and planning for patients with Autism Spectrum Disorder prior to healthcare encounters and co-leads a Simulation Staff Training program to support and educate employees across the hospital on ways to promote healthcare visit preparation, patient-provider interactions, and successful outcomes.

Throughout the current COVID-19 pandemic, hospitals are experiencing a surge of patients who may temporarily be unable to speak while also caring for patients with existing communication difficulties. This session presented current patient-provider communication barriers experienced in hospitals as well as AAC solutions to address these barriers. Emergency preparedness and communication planning tips related to the pandemic were also provided.

Due to COVID-19, care providers are being asked to wear masks and other personal protective equipment (known as PPE) in the presence of older adults. Although masks can prevent the spread of disease, they may also prevent clear communication. The purpose of this video tutorial is to provide strategies for clearer communication while wearing a mask.
